13 year old Dana Wheat had a very consistent competition taking Silver medals for both Beam and Floor and a Bronze on the Bars. Dana ended her competition in overall Bronze medal position. Tegan Forward had a very good competition having been out of the gym for a while, to finish just out of the medals on both Bars and Beam. The 13 & Under team comprising of Tegan Forward, Dana Wheat and Katy Gusterson finished in 4th place overall.
The final competition of the day and in the 15 year age group, Holly Morris was the Club’s only competitor. Holly performed extremely consistently on all 4 pieces of apparatus and took the Gold medal for every discipline, including the Gold for the Floor and Vault event also.
A great start to the competition season for all the gymnasts at the Club with a total of 44 medals being won on the day. Champions in the 8 year and 15+ year sections. The coaching team look forward to a pleasing competition year. Well done to all the gymnasts and coaches that have worked so hard to produce these results.9 gymnasts from the Swallows of Helston Gymnastics Club travelled to Exeter recently to take part in the South West Regional Grades, Club Grades and Voluntary Team competitions.
On the Saturday afternoon the boys were competing for a top 4 ranking in order to secure themselves a National Finals place. The competition proved to be extremely hard, but the boys were hopeful that they could achieve the necessary rankings.
Competing in the Level 1 event was 8 year old Elliot Bullen. Elliot performed extremely confidently, making every apparatus seem effortless. Elliot took the overall Bronze medal in his group and qualified to represent the South West in the forthcoming National Finals to be held in Birmingham in May.
In the Level 3 competition, 10 year olds Calum Walklett and Cameron Wheat were both keen to take a top four placing as they had both represented the Region last year. Both boys handled the pressure very well, although Cameron did end his competition with a major error on Pommel taking him down the ranking into 4th place. Team mate Calum secured 3rd place overall, and two more boys through to the Nationals!
16 year old Jaron Morgan was the Club’s only gymnast in the Voluntary Over 14 competition, competing for a place in the South West Team and aiming for the overall individual medal. Jaron had a very consistent competition with a number of new skills being performed for the first time under pressure. Jaron handled the new challenges comfortably making a few errors here and there in his work. At the end of the final rotation, Jaron earned himself the overall silver medal. Jaron will now travel to Leicester in May to compete with the Regional team at the National Finals. A great end to day one of competition for the boys.
The following day, 5 more of the Club’s gymnasts travelled to Exeter to take part in the South West Club Grades event.
8 year old Matthew Bolton competed at Level 1 in his first competition outside of Cornwall. Making the National Final team was going to be tough, with 27 gymnasts all competing for the top 6 places. Matt made some consistent routines, but with one error on his rings dismount qualification was going to be hard. At the end of the day Matthew took the overall Silver medal, narrowly missing the top spot. This secured him a National final place in his first major event.
9 year old Matthew Heaney had a very good competition at Level 2. After a disappointing competition the day before, Matthew returned to compete in order to prove that he was worthy of a National final place. Competing against 16 other gymnasts of his age, Matthew gained 5th place overall which secured his place in the South West Team for the National Finals in Birmingham also.
Kai Cornish, 10 years, had a very mixed competition and after an error in his High Bar routine and on his Physical Preparation had to settle just outside of the National Final team selection. Kai finished just 0.50 behind in 7th place.
Tom Rimmer, 14 years and Jonathan Murray, 13 years also competed at the same competition in the Level 6 event. Both boys were keen to make the team after narrowly missing out in 2011. Both Jonny and Tom had solid competitions and in the end took the overall silver and bronze medal positions for their efforts. A fantastic achievement for all their hard work over the past few months.
8 out of the 9 boys returned home with National Final places, indicating the strength and depth of the boys within the Club. Coach Edy Bratu was delighted with the boy’s efforts and the Club look forward to the forthcoming Nationals in both Leicester and Birmingham.
